Two garden events this weekend
Hello garden friends! There are two events happening this weekend that you might find interesting.
SATURDAY
If you want to have or learn more about native plants, you must go by Beaver’s Abundance, 1329 Carter Ave. They are having a sale this weekend and it’s not only a great way to pick up some new plant babies, but you’ll get the chance to really learn more about native plants.
Recently I interviewed the founder of the backyard nursery. We talked about the history of the modern lawn and how we got so far away from the native plants that are no longer visible in most landscapes and the branding issue that resulted. I’ll have an article out soon.
The plant sale will begin at 8 a.m. and will continue until noon.
SUNDAY
We’re looking for some helping hands to complete a community garden in the Eden Park neighborhood. This garden, in particular, is going to cater to the elderly population in the neighborhood. We’re building it nice and tall so people will not have to bend over to tend to the garden. But to do that, we need to move a LOT of cinder blocks.
Thankfully, the weather is actually getting nice outside. Seriously, I rode my bike 12 miles yesterday and never broke a sweat! It was so nice! The humidity is down, the temps are down, and it’s just starting to feel lovely!
The garden is located at 3976 Billops Street. Work will begin at 8 a.m. and continue until it’s finished. We’re hoping it shouldn’t take more than a couple hours. Less if we get a lot of hands, so bring a friend!
We will have gloves and tools. All you need to bring is some water and you might want to consider bug spray. Thankfully, the garden area is in a good bit of shade during the morning hours, so again, it’s going to be lovely.
If you have a garden-related event you’d like to let people know about, please send it my way! You can email me at growdowntown@gmail.com.
